Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing Position Summary

Girl Scouts Heart of Central California is seeking a marketing and communications professional to lead the growth of our council through effective and innovative marketing and communications strategies. Girl Scouts Heart of Central California is in a time of expanding membership, programs and experiences for potential and current members. The world of Girl Scouting has changed a great deal in the past few years, and the Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing will manage marketing and communications plans for member and non-member audiences in a constantly shifting marketplace.

The director will create innovative strategies and messaging to increase the relevance of Girl Scouts to GSHCC’s 18-county marketplace and serve GSHCC’s volunteers and girls through strong marketing and communications strategies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage team of marketing, social media, PR, and design contractors to execute strategies
  • Serve as the voice of GSHCC, writing key messaging, PR and other publications to advance the GSHCC mission and initiatives
  • Work closely with internal teams to achieve their goals by creating and managing execution of marketing and communications plans
  • Create and implement strategies that mobilize volunteers for media opportunities
  • Manage public relations for the council, which may include being the council’s spokesperson from time to time
  • Create the long-term strategy for public relations and communications, as well as manage short-term communications and public relations needs as they arise
  • Specific strategies the director oversees: marketing campaign creation and execution for membership; public relations plans and crisis communications; email marketing to membership (with future look at additional marketing to members through other vehicles); creative management (manage a pipeline of creative concepts and work with contractors to deploy to various audiences); social media and digital strategies (work with team of contractors and department contacts to manage social channel content); analytics and optimization (constantly monitor successes and make adjustments); brand building and management
  • Lead by example, performing hands-on, day-to-day oversight and project management
  • Participate on leadership team for GSHCC

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required
  • At least 10 years of experience in marketing and/or communications (if the latter, please list experience in marketing and channel management)
  • Proven strong verbal and written skills: ability to write for any kind of audience
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and a customer relationship management system such as Salesforce. Willingness to learn and use our Girl Scouts “Volunteer Systems” – a SalesForce platform. HTML and social media platform knowledge preferred but not required
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred but not required
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Demonstrate a commitment to recognize and respect the many forms of diversity
  • Demonstrate a willingness to embrace the Girl Scouts mission, goals, values and council-driven programs
  • Valid California driver’s license, a clean driving record, and proof of insurance
  • Available for council-required events (Annual Meeting, Girls Who Inspire, and more)
